Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award, 2011

Professor Yash Pal, a well known scientist and educator, was awarded the 12th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for excellence in Public Administration, Academics and Management. The award was presented to Prof Yash Pal by Her Excellency, The President of India, Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil, on October 15, 2011 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Prof Yash Pal was raised in Pai, Kaithal, Haryana (India), graduated with a degree in physics from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1949 and gained a PhD degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 for his contribution to Science and Space Technology. He was also made a Marconi Fellow in 1980, for his work at the Space Application Centre in Ahmedabad. He is also known for his appearances on Science programs broadcasted on Doordarshan.

He is currently the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
